What Are Your Priorities

In case you haven't already picked up on this I have a lot of ideas on how to make landscaping businesses, including my own, better. But what I've learned over the years is that every idea and every project can't be a priority. If you have too many priorities and projects at once, none of them can be done well.

Years ago, one of my mentors suggested that instead of trying to do everything at once, I take my ideas and create a bracket with them as we do for March Madness. I dual out pairs of ideas, decide which one is more worth the time and investment, and keep going until I have a "Champion." This mentor changed the way I looked at my to-do list, and this perspective helped me to more effectively prioritize projects.

We must have priorities in place to keep our sanity and also make forward progress in our businesses, but setting priorities and then tackling those projects systematically is harder than it sounds. How do you know which projects will have the most impact? Is your team focused on solving the right problems? As a leader, prioritizing your own to-do list and helping your team do the same is part of your role.
