Great Idea: How Grunder Landscaping Found More Commercial Work

Grunder Landscaping Co. has grown rapidly in recent years, from $5M in annual revenue in 2020 to $15M in 2024. Nearly all of this growth has been organic, not through acquisitions, and we can attribute a lot of the growth to going after and successfully winning commercial work. 

What's the secret to this growth?

Knowing our numbers. 

When we implemented Aspire Software in 2020, we were able to get a clearer picture of our financial performance than we could get on the system we were running previously. We were able to clearly see which services were our most profitable. It also helped us to optimize our routes, which reduced our costs. Along with some additional changes we made to better control our costs, we were able to go from 2020-2023 without raising prices for our existing customers due to efficiency gains.

This was important because it allowed us to bring our pricing more in-line with the market, which made it easier for our team to compete for commercial sales. Once the basics were set, our sales team started working on their own tricks, here's what has worked for us:

Relationships

The right relationships have led to a lot of work for us. When we take over one apartment complex and prove ourselves, often the property manager has other nearby complexes they're willing to let us take care of too. The same is true for architects who have recommended us to install their designs after we've worked together on one project. 

We've learned that a job well done is still our best form of marketing, and this is even more true in the commercial space than in residential work. 

Asking for Help

We rely on the expertise of others when we need to, and often bill ourselves as professional problem solves. SiteOne has been a great resource for us when we come across a problem we aren't sure how to solve, a bid we aren't sure how to price, or a spec'd material that we've never used before. We've also relied on our network, pros and other partners like you, to connect with people who have experience with work that's new to us. 

The landscaping industry is so special and everyone's happy to share knowledge and help. That's a benefit to us at GLC just as much as it is to the pros who attend our events or join our ACE Peer Group Program

We've been able to expand our service offerings and capabilities as a result of these strategies, to be a partner that our commercial clients can count on no matter what work their property needs.
